  The course is a self-paced online training course broken into smaller Bitesize Learning chunks. You will cover the following topics:

  Understanding Damp and Mould

  This introductory module explains what damp and mould are, how they form, and why they are such a widespread issue in UK housing. Learners will explore how moisture interacts with cold surfaces, what the term “dew point” means, and why understanding these basic principles is key to preventing and treating damp effectively. This foundation helps staff recognise that damp is a building and environmental issue, not simply a lifestyle factor.

  Types and Causes of Damp

  Not all damp is the same and treating it correctly means knowing what type you’re dealing with. This module breaks down the main types of damp, including condensation, penetrating, rising, plumbing-related, and construction damp. Learners will discover how each type develops, what signs to look for, and what typically causes it, giving them the confidence to distinguish one from another in real homes.

  Identifying Damp in Homes

  In this module, learners take a practical look at how to spot the signs of damp and mould during visits or inspections. It focuses on visual, tactile, and even olfactory clues, from peeling wallpaper to musty smells — as well as listening to how tenants describe their experiences. Learners will understand how small details and good observation skills can make all the difference in identifying the true cause.

  Health Impacts of Damp and Mould

  Damp and mould are not just property issues, they can seriously affect health. This module explains how exposure to mould spores can worsen respiratory conditions, trigger asthma or allergies, and even impact mental wellbeing. It highlights who is most at risk, including children, older adults, and people with existing health problems, helping learners understand why fast, informed action is so important.

  Preventing Damp and Mould

  This module focuses on practical prevention. Learners will explore how everyday actions — like using extractor fans, maintaining even heating, or leaving trickle vents open can reduce condensation and stop mould forming. It also covers property-level solutions such as insulation, ventilation systems, and repairs. The emphasis is on teamwork between landlords and tenants to maintain healthy, dry homes.

  Legal Responsibilities and Awaab’s Law

  This module outlines the legal frameworks that apply to damp and mould across the UK, with particular focus on Awaab’s Law in England. Learners will understand the timeframes landlords must meet for investigating and repairing damp-related hazards, as well as how the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) underpins these duties. It reinforces the message that legal compliance and moral responsibility go hand in hand.

  Treating and Managing Mould Safely

  When mould appears, safe and effective treatment is vital. This final module provides step-by-step guidance on preparing a space, using the right personal protective equipment (PPE), and applying safe cleaning methods such as hydrogen peroxide or vinegar instead of bleach. Learners will also explore how to dry and monitor affected areas, communicate with tenants, and ensure mould doesn’t return.

  To pass this course learners will need to demonstrate their knowledge with a short 10 question assessment.
