Fire Safety Awareness in Housing

Essential fire safety awareness tailored for all those involved in the housing and communities sector. Equip yourself with the knowledge you need to recognise potential hazards, prevent fires from occurring and respond effectively in emergency situations.

Our Bitesize course on Fire Safety Awareness in Housing is designed to elevate fire safety awareness and understanding among housing staff. This course is essential for those seeking an induction-level understanding of fire safety or for anyone needing to build awareness of key fire safety concepts within the housing sector.

Learners will be introduced to the historical and regulatory context in the UK, helping them to understand how incidents have shaped our nation's response to fire safety and impacted legislation in turn. Learners will also discover the fundamentals of fire, exploring the fire triangle and learning how fires start, how they spread and the damage they can cause both to human life and the built environment.

More practically, the course will empower learners to be able to respond appropriately in emergency situations, recognise the different types of fire extinguishers and take steps to keep themselves and their colleagues safe in the workplace.

Did you know?

Each year, cooking causes more accidental fires in the home than anything else. Cooking-related fires tend to result in the most non-fatal casualties and the second most fatalities (behind smoking products) so the importance of promoting cooking fire safety messages cannot be overestimated.

What to expect before, during, and after your course
  • Before the course starts

Our Bitesize Learning courses are available as soon as you enrol. All you need is an internet connection and a supported browser to begin.

  • During the course

The course is a self-paced online training course broken into smaller Bitesize Learning chunks. You will cover the following topics:

Learn about the history of fire safety and why we need to learn from incidents in order to make our homes and buildings safer and prevent future tragedies.

Fire is a devastating and powerful force.  It can destroy belongings, ruin buildings, and, more seriously, take lives - all in a moment.

In this lesson, you will learn about the elements of the fire triangle and understand more about the conditions in which fires start, and the damage they can cause.

Our environments contain many of the ingredients that allow a fire to spread.

Understanding the science of fire behaviour enables us to both prevent fires and quickly stop them when they do start.

In this lesson, you will learn about different fire behaviours.

Fire has a significant impact not just on the human body but also on buildings. The intense heat can be enough to bend and melt even our strongest structures.

In this lesson, you will learn more about the structural and human damage fire can cause.

Knowing what to do in the event of a fire could save your life and the lives of those around you.

In this lesson, you will learn what to do in a fire emergency situation.

We are all responsible for one another’s safety! If you see something is not right, say something!

In this lesson you will find out what you can do to protect yourself and others.

Attempting to fight a fire without the correct knowledge and training can be a dangerous thing to do!

In this lesson you will learn about fire extinguishers and how to maintain and identify the correct one for the job.

Within your organisation, specific individuals are tasked with regularly checking the building's fire safety measures.

These tasks should be completed at varying intervals to ensure comprehensive coverage.

In this lesson, we will detail the timing and nature of these essential activities.

Sometimes the risk of fire is unavoidable. This is the case with hot work.

Certain industries will have more exposure to hot work.

In this lesson you will learn more about what hot work is and how to make it as safe as possible.

Burns and scalds are types of skin and tissue damage caused by heat. Both can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal, and both are treated similarly.

In this lesson, you will learn how to react when someone receives an injury from a burn.

  • Assessment

To pass this course learners will need to demonstrate their knowledge with a short 10 question assessment.

  • Certification

Learners will receive a CPD certificate on our Accredible certificates platform. This is a shareable demonstration of your knowledge
